An original painting of Lighting the Lantern on the Wharf in Bayfield by local artist Doug Darnbrough, is being auctioned online to raise funds for the Bayfield Historical Society.

Lantern Painting

Lantern Sketch

This is a painting of Tom Castle (1892-1962) the grandson of George Castle (1830-1897) the first of the Castle family to immigrate from Northamptonshire, England, who purchased Lot 6 Bayfield (now Bayfield Terrace on the north side.)

The Castle family were fishermen. A lantern was lit on the wharf every evening to guide boats back to the harbour. The painting was produced from a photo taken of Tom Castle c.1930 tending to this duty.

This framed painting, done in acrylic medium on gesso over hardboard, measures 20” x 26”.  The framed pencil sketch measures 20” x 26”.
