  • Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield: Master Chart Maker of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River

    This definitive work by local author David Yates pays tribute to Canada’s first nautical pioneer, Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield, after whom Bayfield was named. A Royal Navy surveyor, Bayfield spent more than two decades charting the Great Lakes and the St. Lawerence River and Gulf, producing maps that were instrumental in the development of early Canada while saving the lives of countless mariners and immigrants.

  • Bayfield: History of Our Harbour

    In 1851, Bayfield was a hamlet with a wagon and plough-making works, two blacksmith shops, an ashery, a distillery, two tanneries, a brickyard and about 125 residents. The construction of a harbour during the 1870s helped spur its growth. By 1876, Bayfield was incorporated as a village with a population of over 800.

  • Lest We Forget

    Mobilizing in London, the 161st Battalion began recruiting men in late 1915 in Huron County. Comprising 28 officers and 749 other ranks, the Battalion embarked from Halifax on November 1, 1916, on the troop ship Lapland, to their destination of the United Kingdom on November 11. A stirring account of their stories of bravery and heroism.
